Guidelines

There are now a plethora of guidelines for many conditions and the College of Emergency Medicine has stated in the past that it likes to cover them in examinations; particularly those that have been recently released.  We know from our experience both that writing examination questions from guidelines is relatively straight forward (and therefore likely to be done by time-pressured examiners!) and that the recently released guidelines act as a reminder to those writing the examination questions of topics that had perhaps slipped their minds.  As such you should be familiar with most if not all of the guidelines below.

In many, but unfortunately not all, cases there is  a ‘quick reference guide’ or flowchart for a guideline and given the volume of information to be assimilated for the MCEM B we suggest that you use these for the majority of your revision.  We have tried to include only those guidelines that have some information pertinent to Emergency Medicine but many guidelines are predominantly for other clinicians and you should look to only revise that which is directly relevant to emergency care.  The more detailed full guidelines can be used to supplement areas that are not clear.

Where one guideline is shared between two institutions (e.g. Royal College of Physicians and National Institute of Excellence) we have listed it under only one institution.  Where NICE have provided guidance and the College of Emergency Medicine have provided a response (e.g. Venous thromboembolism) we have listed only the College’s guidance.  We have listed only the most up to date guidance with a preference for those from UK institutions and, with apologies, a preference for NICE guidelines over SIGN guidelines where there is a different guideline for each.  For ease of use, all paediatric guidelines, including those from NICE, are grouped together.
